Matlock & District Football League
Press round up by chairman Drew Robertson from Saturday, 7 November, 20009, or how the clubs saw it!

Kings reign over penalty mad Shirland

Kings Arms upset the Matlock & District Football League form book on Saturday in a 2-1 victory that left Shirland Miners Welfare extremely disgruntled.

It was after the break, following a fairly quiet Crich first half, that the deadlock was broken and sparks flew when referee Peter Bailey booked a Shirland player for a push in the back resulting in a penalty, fired into the top of the net by Scott Gregory.

Fuelled up by this decision, Shirland pushed on and were rewarded with the equaliser through Ian Hursthouse, but it was Kings who took the win with a great strike by Peter Berrisford.

Darley Dale Lions went back top of the league with a 5-3 away win against Matlock Town Youth. It was striker Aaron OĠNeill who was on target again with a brace, matched by Matthew Scott and added to by a single strike from Ashley Webster. Matlock goals came from Scott Martin (2) and Lewis Mason.

AFC Lea Holloway strengthened their fifth place in the league with a hard-fought victory against a creative Ashbourne, battling back from behind twice with Dave Meredith and Phil Clones goals from the visitors.

Inspirational Shaun Bott ran onto a Dave Whitford ball, slotting it past the on-rushing keeper, for the first equaliser and then turned provider for Nigel EmbertonĠs brave clip past the keeper.

It was a fine edge-of-the-box strike from Adam Pearson that earned the spoils, together with some solid defending to keep Ashbourne at bay until the final whistle.

With club captain Brian Owen back from injury and Kieran Griffiths switching from Matlock Town Youth, Harveys Bar took all three points with a 4-1 away win against Riddings Rovers.

Early on in the game David Armshaw's flick found Colin Maycock who raced through and put Harveys 1-0 up after ten minutes and the second coming from some good work by Martyn Taylor and a cross which was buried by Griffiths.

Riddings, who earlier missed a penalty, got back into the game after the break with a spot kick from Adrian Clarke but minutes later Harveys bagged a third which came when Craig Cantrill crossed to find Tom Woodhouse who scored with a bullet header. Woodhouse then finished with ease after a swift counter-attack.

Tibshelf Community were the other winners of the day with a 2-1 result against Laburnum Saints, who took a 1-0 Andy Clifton lead into half-time against a youthful home team.

Tired legs and giving the ball away cost Saints dear as Tibshelf got on top and scored after 60 and 80 minutes with goals from John Hart and Dan Bacon.

Hilcote United, based across the county border in Huthwaite, were 4-0 winners against East Drayton in the Notts Minor Cup to reach the third round.

Five teams will be in Derbyshire Junior Cup North action this weekend the games to catch on Saturday (14 November, 2009) are AFC Lea Holloway v Youlgrave United, Laburnum Saints v Pinxton North End, Darley Dale Lions v Tideswell United, Wirksworth Town v Matlock Town Youth, Shirland Miners Welfare v Holmefield Arms.
