Press Round-up

Manor Pharmacy Shield
Saints and Kings Manor Pharmacy wins
Laburnum 2 Tishelf Community 0
Scorers: M. Warren and P. Denton

After an extended Christmas break, Laburnum Saints met Tibself Community in the freezing cold on Dimple Fields.

Laburnum won the game through determination and experience with a defence marshalled by Michael Charlton and policed by Simon Bunting and Dan Killick. Tibshelf were reduced to only two chances in the game.

Playing on the break Pete Denton and Matthew Warren always threatened and it was no surprise when the Saints went ahead with Warren finishing off an end-to-end move begun by the excellence of Killick.

The game was effectively won when Denton was put through by Warren after a period of pressure by the young Tibshelf side. All in all this was a game the Saints deserved to win, helped in no small part by great performances from Martin Carson and Chris Slack, in the heart of the midfield, and solid performances from Charlton, Killick and Bunting.

Laburnum MOM: Simon Bunting Tibsheld MOM: Jordan Adams.

Kings Arms 3 Harveys Bar 2
Kings Arms scorers : C. Merrett (2), D. Mason
Black Hippo scorer: T. Parfit

Kings were on top in the first half and ended the period 2-0 up with two goals from Craig Merrett.

But the home side Kings came out slowly after the break and Hippo took advantage with a screaming goal over the keeper's head by Tom Parfit.

Kings regained their two gaol advantage with a goal from Darryl Mason and looked to have the tie in the bag, until Parfit stepped up again for his second goal of the game. Kings just held on against a very determined Black Hippo – final score 3-2.

Laburnum Saints, Kings Arms and Hilcote United are through to the semi-finals with the fourth berth being taken by the winners of Shirland Miners Welfare v Riddings Rovers.

League
Bott and Godfrey braces earn draw
Ashbourne 2 AFC Lea Holloway 2
Ashbourner scorers: M. Warren. Holloway scorer: S. Bott

AFC Lea Holloway came away from Ashbourne with a well-earned point to keep their unbeaten league run going, although they can be disappointed not to have won the game despite playing the entire game with only ten players.

Ashbourne's advantage was hardly noticeable with stand-in centre half Adam Pearson and Karl Taylor defending well. The home side took the lead through Ian Godfrey who capitalised on a rebound.

Holloway equalised ten minutes later, Shaun Bott running onto Nigel Emberton's flick on to slot past the keeper.

The visitors took the lead within five minutes of the restart, Bott simply couldn't miss after robbing the ball from keeper Liam Rogersand tapping into an open goal. The home side put Holloway under intense pressure but good defending from all limited them to long range shots which didn't trouble the away keeper Andrew Bird.

Ashbourne equalised two minutes from time, Godfrey back-heeling in following a goalmouth scramble.

Ashbourne MOM: Ian Godfrey. Holloway MOM: Shaun Bott

Press Round-up
Keeton hat-trick helps extend DarleyŐs lead at the top
30 January, 2010

Darley Dale Lions extended their lead at the top of Matlock & District Football League thanks to a hat-trick from Liam Keeton to earn a 4-0 victory against Harveys Bar.

It was a tight first half with Lions only taking control after the break when they deservedly took the lead with a long-range strike from Keeton, who scored two more similar efforts to secure his man of the match performance. Martin French scored the other following a good move down the left from Mark Ashton and Wez Harrop.

This gives Darley a four-point cushion over Shirland Miners Welfare, who were again frustrated with their Derbyshire Junior Cup North quarter-final clash at Holmefield called off.

In the only other league encounter AFC Lea Holloway's midfielder maestro Shaun Bott grabbed a brace to earn a 2-2 draw over Ashbourne.

Despite Holloway playing the entire game with only ten players, Ashbourne's advantage was hardly noticeable with stand-in centre half Adam Pearson and Karl Taylor defending well.

The home side took the lead through Ian Godfrey who capitalised on a rebound only for Holloway to equalised ten minutes later, Bott running onto Nigel Emberton's flick to slot past keeper Liam Rogers.

Holloway took the lead within five minutes of the restart, Bott simply couldn't miss after robbing the ball from keeper Rogers and tapping into an open goal.

The home side put Holloway under intense pressure but good defending from all limited them to shots which didnŐt trouble the away keeper Andrew Bird.

Ashbourne equalised two minutes from time, Godfrey back-heeling in following a goalmouth scramble.

Manor Pharmacy Shield action saw Kings Arms Kings on top in the first half with two goals from Craig Merrett.

It was a screaming goal over the keeper's head by Tom Parfit that gave Black Hippo hope after the break, but Kings regained their two-goal advantage with a goal from Darryl Mason. This looked to have the tie in the bag until Parfit stepped up again for his second goal of the game. Kings held on to win 3-2 against a gutsy, determined Black Hippo.

In the other Shield encounter Laburnum Saints beat Tibshelf Community through determination and experience with a defence marshalled by Michael Charlton and policed by Simon Bunting and Dan Killick.

Saints' deserved win was thanks to great performances from Martin Carson and Chris Slack in the heart of the midfield and solid work from Charlton, Killick and Bunting who earned his sideŐs man of the match. Tibshelf's Jordan Adams shone for his team.

Fixtures this weekend (6 February, 2010) sees Derbyshire Junior Cup North quarter-final action with Holmewood v Shirland Miners Welfare; League games include Darley Dale Lions v Black Hippo, Hilcote United v Harveys Bar, Kings Arms v Matlock Town Youth, AFC Lea Holloway v Tibshelf Community and Riddings Rovers v Laburnum Saints.
