Manager
Bocking grabs the winner
Ashbourne
3 Riddings Rovers 4
Home scorers:- Meredith, Millward, Williams
Away: Mosley, M. Turner (2), Bocking
Rovers travelled to
Shirley to take on Ashbourne after the fixture was switched from Ashbourne
Recreation as the surface was unfit but considering the amount of rain we
have had these last three weeks the pitch was in fantastic condition and
credit to the home side for that.
Rovers
started the brightest and were creating chances early on with David Robinson
getting behind the Ashbourne defence with ease but an enforced shuffle around
at the back made Rovers look a little susceptible to giving away goal scoring
opportunities to the home side and this was to be the making of a very entertaining
game.
Rovers
took the lead on 20 minutes when a corner kick was well met by the head
of Pete Mosley who converted the chance well for his first of the season,
and it was 0-2 soon after when a neat move saw Chris Turner take his opportunity
very well with a confident finish low to the keepers left.
Ashbourne
were causing problems with their direct ball approach with their midfield
winning most of the second balls they registered just before half time when
a ball into the box wasn't anticipated by the Rovers defence and there were
two Ashbourne players waiting to pounce with Dave Meredith being the lucky
one.
The
second period saw the home side replace their injured forward with Sean
Millward, who was superb against Rovers last year for Town, and he caused
us many problems throughout the half with his pace and got the equaliser
on the hour when he pounced on a through ball to out pace the Rovers back
line a scored with a confident finish low into the corner of the net leaving
Danny Clarke with no chance.
The
game was now end to end with both sides going for the win and on 70 minutes
Mark Turner found space in the box and finished well to put Rovers 2-3 up.
Ashbourne
made changes and were level three minutes later when Steve Williams scored
after yet again Rovers failed to clear their lines.
Riddings
made substitutions to put a little more energy into the side with Michael
Dables and Gavin Bocking coming on to replace David Robinson and Andrew
Bonser and it made the telling difference as a long goal kick from Clarke
wasn't dealt with by the Ashbourne defence and Bocking managed to withstand
a challenge from behind and keep his feet to score the winner on 86 minutes.
Rovers
had the ball in the net again on 88 minutes when Dables raced through and
bundled the ball over the line after a challenge with the keeper and a defender
but referee Graham Brentnall saw a hand ball and disallowed the goal.
Riddings
hung on to claim another valuable three points away from home which on the
whole they definitely deserved.
MOM:
Steve Burnton, Ashbourne. MOM: Mark Turner, Riddings Rovers.
Clubs
are failing to send in reports, so here is our another Press Round-up added
to when snippets of information are forthcoming
Chasing
pack close on leaders
Matlock & District Football League's chasing pack made up ground on the
top three in a good weekend for the mid-table teams.
Matlock Town Youth's
hero was Scott Martin who bagged a hat-trick in his side's 3-2 away win
against Hilcote United. He lobbed the keeper in each half and scored the
winner after a mix-up between Hilcote's keeper and defended. Matlock hung
onto the lead with strong defending under attack from the home side in the
last ten minutes of the game.
It
was a fully deserved three points away in difficult conditions for AFC Lea
Holloway against a battling Laburnum side. Scott Andrews and Nigel Emberton
scored the goals, one in each half.
Kings
Arms returning legend Matt Surgey's goal earned his side victory in an action-packed
first half at Crich to beat Tibshelf Community. Richard West put the home
side ahead, only for Jamie Price to equaliser. It was a rash challenge that
led to Tibshelf being awarded a penalty, but Duke Hartshorne was up to the
mark and saved it. Both teams pushed for goals after the break but the score
remained 2-1.
Riddings
Rovers manager Gavin Bocking gave his team a 4-3 victory away against Ashbourne
in an entertaining game. Rovers took the lead on 20 minutes when a corner
kick was well met by the head of Pete Mosley and man-of-the-match Chris
Turner took his opportunity with a confident finish low to the keeper's
left soon after.
Ashbourne
were causing problems and just before half-time Dave Meredith pounced in
the area to beat the defence. Then, shortly after the restart AshbourneÕs
Sean Millward grabbed the equaliser with a confident finish low into the
corner of the net.
On
70 minutes Mark Turner found space in the box and finished well to put Rovers
in the leader only for Steve Williams to level three minutes later.
Riddings
keeper Danny Clarke's long kick wasn't dealt with by the Ashbourne defence
and Bocking managed to withstand a challenge from behind and keep his feet
to score the winner on 86 minutes.
Darley
Dale Lions were again frustrated in their bid to play Tideswell in the Derbyshire
Junior Cup North despite switching the fixture to Cavendish Playing Fields,
where games were off due to the weather.
