Darley's pace too much for Saints
Darley
Dale Liions 6 Laburnum 0
Scorers:- Allsop, Scott, O'Neill (3), Harrop
A
local derby between Darley Dale Lions and Laburnum Saints saw the Lions
come out on top with a resounding 6-0 victory.
On
a day when conditions were not suited to playing attractive football, the
teams started well trying their best to find a breakthrough. Both defences
were looking strong until about 15 minutes in when Aaron O'Neill managed
to escape down the left hand side. His chipped cross was enough of a tease
for the keeper to come out to try and claim the ball but he didn't see Matthew
Allsop, who managed to sneak in and flick his header past the keeper to
open the scoring.
At
1-0 Laburnum's heads didn't drop and they came back at Darley looking for
an equaliser. Some resolute defending and a superb full stretch save from
Gaz Widdowson kept the score at 1-0 before a simple route one approach opened
Laburnum up for Darley to score their second.
A
long goal kick was flicked on well by Allsop to his striker partner Matthew
Scott who flicked the ball over the on-rushing keeper and finished clinically
on the volley. That made it 2-0 which was how it stayed until half time.
The
second half saw Darley Dale Lions put Laburnum to the sword. Four goals,
including a hat-trick from O'Neill, and one from Wez Harrop ensured Darley
kept up their impressive start to the season.
Harrop's
goal, a smart finish at the back post with his weaker right foot, while
O'Neill's hat-trick consisting of a header, left-footed strike and penalty
completed the rout.
Laburnum
rarely threatened in the second half, despite bringing on subs at regular
intervals, but did very nearly pull back a consolation goal when a harshly
awarded free-kick was superbly hit by Laburnum's striker only to see it
ricochet back off the inside of the Darley post and be subsequently cleared.
This
was as close as Laburnum got and when the final whistle went there could
be very few arguments with the final score as Darley successfully continued
their push for the title.
Saints,
who failed to cope with Darley's pace, will have to bounce back from this
defeat and soon!
Hot-shot
Wright on target with a brace
Shirland
Miners Welfare 5 Tibshelf 1
Scorers:- Boot, Hursthouse, O. Brown, S. Wright (2)
Manager
Dave Thurnham hailed hot-shot Steve Wright after the striker's two-goal
burst and all round play ensured that shirland walked away with three vital
points.
Shirland
started the game with only one thing on their minds and within five minutes
Steven Boot scored with a fantastic header to prove Shirland's intent.
The
home side Shirland oozed class from the off, with Wright looking lively
as he tested Tibshelf's keeper three minutes later with a long-range drive
that was pushed past the post.
Ian
Hursthouse was next up for Shirland scoring his sixth goal of the season
with a hard fought, well worked goal to put Shirland into a 2-0 lead.
Tibshelf's
John Hart had a good chance on goal only to be denied with a fantastic challenge
from Ben Skelton who was making his first start in defence for Shirland
this season.
It
wasn't long before Shirland scored again with a goal from Oliver Brown,
a darting run down the left wing saw Brown turn in towards goal, round two
players before hiting a sweet shot to make the score 3-0.
In
the second half Shirland took the free-kick which found Steve Wright who
collected the ball well at his feet turned and scored with sheer power making
the score 4-0.
The
next ten minutes saw Shirland rip Tibshelf's defence apart with shot after
shot but finaly Wright again popped up with a stunning goal, his second
of the match and his third in two games for Shirland.
Tibshelf
got a goal back in the remaining seven minutes but it was too late in the
game for them to get anything from this game.
