Shirland's 'Heaven and Hell' thoughts
Shirland Miners Welfare 4 Laburnum Saints 1
Home scorers: I Hursthouse, G Brown, S Wright, D Hegarty, B Skelton
Away scorer: R Austin

Manager Dave Thurnham reckons Shirland Miners Welfare are four steps from heaven – but could be just as close to hell.

Shirland's last five games, which includes the Cavendish Cup Final, will all now be decided in the space of ten days. Shirland's biggest task is playing two league games and a cup final in five days, just one day's rest in-between three massive games!

Shirland started the game on top and within ten minutes Ian Hursthouse slotted home for Shirland's first, the celebrations after the goal emphasised just what that goal meant to the club.

The home side's second goal came when Dale Hegarty threaded through a pass to Gaz Brown, who was sharp to react and he produced a chip of such calm audacity that it almost seemed to suprise himself.

The second-half saw Shirland bring on Richard Hill, Ben Skelton and goal machine Steven Wright, who with his first touch turned two players to fire home a third goal from 40 yards out.

Laburnum's goal came when the referee awarded a goal kick to Shirland, ten seconds later and a Laburnum player shouting corner the referee changed his mind and awarded a corner. Laburnum took the corner, crossed the ball and scored with a fine headed goal.

With 15 minutes left in the game Shirland could have scored another four goals with fantastic efforts from Wright, Oliver Brown and Hegarty.

With five minutes left Ben Skelton darted into the box and got a foot on a Dale Hegarty thunderbolt to slot home Shirland's fourth and to earn three vital points.

• MOM: Shirland's Ian Hursthouse.

Press Round-up
Lions retain home record to stay on top
24 April, 2010

Darley Darley Lions kept up there unbeaten Whitworth Park home record to retain top slot of the Matlock & District Football League by one point in a 5-0 demolition of recent cup winners Hilcote United as the season reaches its climax over the next fortnight.

It was Matt Allsop who opened the scoring after rounding keeper Mark Turner from a Darren Longley through ball, a half-time scoreline despite numerous chances for both sides.

After the break Darley took control as Aaron O'Neill added the second from a Mark Ashton corner and Wes Harrop netted the third, scoring with his first touch after coming on as substitute.

The last two goals were courtesy of a Danny Stephenson header and another from man-of-the-match O'Neill, taking his league tally to 27 league goals for the season.

Second placed rivals Shirland Miners Welfare outclassed Laburnum Saints in their 4-1 win at Stonebroom.

Ian Hursthouse slotted in the first ten minutes into the match. Dale Hegarty threaded a pass to Gaz Brown who cheekily chipped the keeper to extend the first-half lead.

Goal machine Steven Wright fired home Shirland's third with his first touch of the ball in the second-half.

Laburnum replied with a fine Richard Austin header from a disputed corner but with five minutes left Ben Skelton darted into the box and got his foot on a Hegarty thunderbolt to secured all three points to keep close on the heals of leaders Darley Dale, with two games in hand for Shirland.

Matlock Town Youth strengthened their third place with some breathtaking style which earned a 5-2 victory over Riddings Rovers.

But it was the away team that dominated the first-half with goals from David Robinson and Tony Wain.

Matlock respond shortly before the break with a goal from Alex Crossley to make it 2-1, but it was the half-time team talk that got the Cavendish Fields home side going.

Two goals from Steve Pardey, a second from Crossley and Chris Booth netted to wrap up the match which Matlock cruised through the second-half. Some great triangular passing and flowing movement was just too much for Riddings.

Harveys Bar ended their league season on a high with a 5-2 away victory against Tibshelf Community.

Goals from Chris Haywood, Dave Armshaw (2), Dom Newton and Scott Bradshaw did the damage.

Haywood's man-of-the-match status helped lift the side who are oozing confidence for their Cavendish Cup Final clash against a strong Shirland Miners Welfare at South Normanton Athletic's Lees Lane ground on Bank Holiday Monday. Kick-off is 7.15pm.

• League fixtures on Saturday (1 May, 2010) include Darley Dale Lions v Tibshelf Community, Laburnum Saints v Ashbourne, AFC Lea Holloway v Matlock Town Youth Riddings Rovers v Shirland Miners Welfare. Cavendish Cup Final Monday, 3 May, 2010, Harveys Bar v Shirland Miners Welfare.

Fantastic five
for Harveys
Tibshelf Community 2
harveys Bar 5

Home scorers: C Haywood, D Armshaw (2), S Bradshaw

This game was a story of two halves, with the pitch playing a part in that. This being one of the smallest pitches in the league and having a slope in the what had to be the hottest day of the year was going to make it difficult for any team.

The game kicked off and for a fifth game in a row Harveys had a different back four out. Having lost the toss Harveys were shooting up hill and found going tough.

Tibshelf seemed to play the long ball tactic and to their credit it was working, causing problems in the new look back four. After ten minutes the deadlock was broken when the long ball wasn't dealt with by the defense and left Adam Wild stranded as Tibshelf's strikers headed home.

Harveys were not at the races and needed changing as the game was going by some players. Chris Haywood gave options wide as Harveys looked to get back into the game and with Dave Goodall finding Haywood before slotting home with a well-worked goal.

Tibshelf seem to want it more until Harveys changed formation then couldn't deal with a Harveys three-man midfield. The end was drawing to a close with the score level before another mistake in the back five left meant Tibshelf the happier at half-time leading 2-1.

After a grilling Harveys team started to wake up with Haywood the only player who seemed to want to be on the pitch. Harveys were now kicking down hill and Tibshelf were tiring in the sun.

From kick-off Harveys went forward and after Haywood's movement off the ball left Dave Armshaw to finish in style.

Harveys seem to have the belief to go on a win this game and started to play the football which we have seen most of the season. The hard work from the midfield three was just too much for Tibshelf and Harveys just couldn't find the finishing touch with Armshaw and Haywood coming close several times.

The killer goal was then well worked down the right before Armshaw finished the season off with a brace.

The hard ground caused problems with both Harveys' wingers having to come off giving Dom Newton and Scott Bradshaw a short work out before the final. This was enough for two players who wanted to prove their worth and that they did, Bradshaw's first touch to bring the ball down from Goodall's through ball before hitting the ball from 25 yards past a stranded keeper into the top corner, not a bad way to get your first goal.

There were five minutes left when Gavin Newton, whose pace was just too much for Tibshelf to deal with after a day of hard work, found the net after Haywood's hard work was blocked by the keeper for Newton the race on and finish Harveys' season with a well-deserved win.

• Anthony Wood MOM Chris Haywood.
