Riddings
triumph on heavy pitch
Riddings
Rovers 3 Laburnum Saints 1
Home scorers: A Coleman (2), og (C. Slack)
Away scorer: A Clifton
Riddings Rovers booked
their place in the Cavendish Cup Semi-Finals for the second year in succession
with a workman like performance against a well organised Laburnum Saints.
The
pitch was only passed fit an hour before kick off due to the hard frost
from Friday evening and for the first time this season the playing surface
started to deteriorate after a long winter, this effected the game as both
sides were trying to play football but it was quite difficult to do so in
the middle of the park.
Rovers
took the lead on 25 minutes when a quick break led to the ball being delivered
into the box and Andrew Bonser surprisingly out jumping the Saints defence
to nod down for Adam Coleman. His shot was deflected eventually over the
line after a mix up between the Saints defenders, although the ball did
seem to cross the line before the attempted clearance which rebounded off
the back of the defenders head.
Both
sides continued to try and play some good stuff but the pitch was already
starting to take its toll on some of the players and both sets of wing backs
looked tired as the game was being played mostly in the center of the heavy
pitch.
Saints
did have the ball in the net just before half-time but the goal was disallowed
after a marginal off-side decision went in favour of the defence.
Laburnum
started the second half the brighter of the two sides and were rewarded
on 50 minutes when the ball was delivered into the box and Coleman's clearance
fell to Andy Clifton who wasn't going to miss from eight yards out to make
it 1-1.
Rovers
changed personnel and formation as the need for better wing play was evident
and eventually it payed off as Coleman who had switched to the right found
space on the corner of the eighteen yard box and rifled his shot past Tim
Killick in the Saints goal beating the keeper at his near post. It was Coleman's
third goal in two games.
Rovers
were trying to see the game out when they eventually scored a third after
Coleman again delivered from the right when really he should of been keeping
the ball in the corner and the unlucky Chris Slack headed past his own keeper
to place Rovers in the semi-finals against Harveys Bar.
A
change in fortunes against the kryptonites will be needed if Riddings are
to break their duck of loosing semi finals as Rovers have failed to beat
Harveys in both league fixtures this season and they will be hoping its
third time lucky as Rovers lost out in two semi finals last season.
Laburnum''s MOM: Matt Warren.
How
Laburnum saw 'rotten day at Riddingst...
It was a lack lustre
performance from an inform Saints side who, only two weeks earlier, had
beaten Riddings with a very hard working performance. Energy levels were
not there which meant a lot of defending and not a lot of open play in the
first half.
Riddings
took an early lead and never really looked back in the first half. Andy
Clifton's strike early in the second half raised the Saints for the first
15 minutes and things looked more promising. But Riddings kept going and
caught Saints twice on the break.
The
hard working Chris Slack was very unlucky to score the third with an own
goal for the visitors. Saints will look back at this game and rue the chances
they missed to progress.
Harveys
leave Lions wounded
Harveys
Bar 3 Darley Dale Lions 0
Home scorers: D. Armshaw (2), J Cunningham
When the draw for the
Cavendish Cup quarter finals came out this was always going to be the one
to watch.
Harvey's
this season have had their ups and downs but can prove too much on the day
for some teams. But having already lost to Darley Dale Lions twice this
season Harvey's hit men had points to prove.
Harveys
had to shuffle the pack to start this game as they were without most of
their squad due to injuries. But with a win last week over Black Hippo they
were out to knock the league leaders out of the cup.
Lions
kicked the game off and for the first 20 minutes made Harveys defence and
goal keeper work. Wez Harrop and Liam Keeton were knocking on Harvey's door
only to find it being closed as Martyn Taylor and John Cunningham stood
tall.
But
it was Lions who got the first chance as Keeton beat the offside trap and
went one-on-one with stand in keeper Craig Cantrill who pulled off the save
to keep it 0-0.
Harveys
then kicked into action and with some brilliant football they found Dave
Armshaw who nodded home on the half hour mark. With a spring in their step
Harveys pushed forward and once again Armshaw was there only to be denied
by the crossbar with a 30-yard volley to put his side 2-0 before the break.
After
the break Lions wanted to get back into the game. Some neat work from Mark
Ashton and Martin French on the wings wasn't converted in the box and Harveys
back five held strong as they couldn't get started.
Nerves
were showing and at 1-0 Lions still had a chance to get back into the game.
Harveys
took their time to get going but when they did Lions had no answer. Tom
Woodhouse and Dom Newton putting in the hard work before finding Armshaw
again this time flicking the ball up with his right and finishing with a
left foot volley from 30 yards into the top corner.
Lions
introduced West who gave them some real fire in midfield and straight from
the off Keeton came close again only to be denied by Cantrill for the second
time in the match.
Lions
were then reduced to long shots but were met with firm hands and Harveys'
bodies in the way.
The
killer goal came in the 82nd minute as Woodhouse's corner seemed to go straight
in, only later to be confirmed that a neat touch on the line from Cunningham
steered the ball past Webster in goal.
Harveys
held strong to keep the clean sheet and now go on to face Riddings Rovers
in the semi-final at home.
Harveys
Bar MOM: Craig Cantrill. Darley Dale Lions MOM: Ashley Webster.

Cup triumph wounds Lions

February, 2010
Harveys
Bar produced the performance of the Cavendish Cup weekend with a fantastic
3-0 win over Darley Dale Lions, with striker Dave Armshaw bagging a brace.
Lions
put plenty of pressure on in the first 20 minutes with Wez Harrop and Liam
Keeton knocking on Harvey's door only to find it being closed as Martyn
Taylor and John Cunningham stood tall. Stand-in goalkeeper Craig Cantrill
had to pull off a fine save in a one-on-one encounter with Keeton.
Harveys
then kicked into action and with some brilliant football found Dave Armshaw
who nodded home on the half hour mark. With a spring in their step, Harveys
pushed forward and Armshaw rattled the crossbar with a 30-yard volley.
In
the second half Lions produced some neat play, but wing work from Mark Ashton
and Martin French wasn't converted in the box.
Harveys'
Tom Woodhouse and Dom Newton put in the hard work before finding Armshaw
again, this time flicking the ball up with his right and finishing with
a left-foot volley from 30 yards into the top corner.
The
killer goal came in the 82nd minute as Woodhouse's corner was neatly touched
in by Cunningham who steered the ball past keeper Ashley Webster
AFC
Lea Holloway bowed out of the Cavendish Cup 4-3 against league high-flyers
Shirland Miners Welfare in a physical game at Lea Green.
Shirland
took the lead within two minutes, Steven Boot rising above the Holloway
defence to nod home.
Free-scoring
Shaun Bott equalised midway through the first half, firing home a rebound
after new signing Peter Stevenson's shot wasn't cleared.
Stephen
Wright capitalised on some casual defending to fire Shirland in front to
make it 1-2 at half-time.
Holloway
had more of the ball in the second half and were rewarded when Bott fired
home after being put through by Nigel Emberton, but they again found themselves
behind when Wright scored from the penalty spot.
Ross
Dove brought Holloway level with a header but it was Lee Bellamy's scrambled
goal five minutes from time that sealed it.
Riddings
Rovers earned Cavendish Cup victory with a steady performance against a
well-organised Laburnum Saints. Rovers took the lead on 25 minutes when
Andrew Bonser surprisingly out jumped the Saints defence to nod down for
Adam Coleman whose shot was deflected over the line.
Laburnum
were rewarded on 50 minutes when the ball was delivered into the box and
Coleman's clearance fell to Andy Clifton who scored from eight yards.
Striker
Coleman rifled an 18-yard shot past Tim Killick in the Saints goal before
Laburnum's hard-working Chris Slack unluckily headed passed his own keeper
from a Coleman cross to end the game 3-1.
In
the only league match Kings Arms were 3-0 victors away to Black Hippo.
It's silverware chasing on Saturday (27 February, 2010) with quarter-final
action in the Cavendish Cup with Tibshelf Community v Matlock Town Youth,
and in the Manor Pharmacy Shield Shirland Miners Welfare play Riddings Rovers.
League action sees Darley Dale Lions v Hilcote United, Kings Arms v Ashbourne
and Laburnum Saints v Harveys. .
