Cavendish Cup semi-final...

Wel-fare dos to a fantastic win
Matlock Town Youth 1 Shirland Miners Welfare 3
Home scorer: S Pardey
Away scorers: S Boot, D Hegarty, I Hursthouse

Shirland Miners Welfare delivered a poke in the eye to the critics who wrote off their chances of silverware with a fantastic 3-1 win against a well-organised Matlock Town Youth to reach the Cavendish Cup final.

Shirland's Richard Harrison was the architect of a win and delighted boss Dave Thurnham declared: "Richard is an amazing athlete who took control off the midfield and delivered some fantastic passes which caused Matlock some major problems."

Dale Hegarty and Steven Wright started up front for Shirland both impressive, both were assured, showing composure on the ball – class acts whenever Shirland chipped away at Matlock's defence.

The visitors took the lead with yet another goal from captain Steven Boot, whose fight and hunger for the ball is incredible. Shirland dominated the game and never looked like conceding but a mistake at the back let in Steve Pardey to level the scores.

The second half Shirland had the momentum, carrying the ball forward with confidence as they sensed more goals would come, Wright demanding the best from Matlock's keeper with two quick fire shots in the first five minutes.

Matlock seemed to rely on striker Scott Martin too much, turning to the young lad far too often and clinging to his magic feet and those mazy runs. Instead he was met by dead ends, blocked by the presence of Gary Bacon and Paul Hardy, both impressing in the centre of defence.

Shirland's second goal came when Richard Harrison collected the ball in midfield turned two players and hit a sweet long range pass which found Gaz Brown who then crossed a perfect pass to Hegarty who scored a belter of a goal from 10 yards out.

Shirland's Ian Hursthouse came on as a sub and within one minute ripped Matlock's defence apart to score and make the score 3-1 twelve minutes later.

With so many injuries from last week's Manor Pharmacy Shield final and after dropping two points in midweek Shirland's manager Thurnham tried to give his players a dose of medicine known to most as 'reality' and asked the squad to think hard and long about the consequences of winning nothing this season after working so hard, which worked well as the players gave everything they had to win this game.

Man-of-the-match for the seventh time in ten games went to Shirland's Steven Boot.

MINERS DIG DEEP! Shirland Miners Welfare moved within a point of their rivals Darley Dale Lions with a 5-2 victory over AFC Lea Holloway (Wednesday 21 April, 2010). The home team went 1-0 up only for Holloway to get one back 45 seconds later with an own goal by Paul Hardy. Holloway went into half-time 2-1 the better thanks to a Ross Dove goal. Shirland didn't come to life until the last 20 minutes scoring four goals, with Holloway the better side until that point. Shirland scorers Steven Boot, Oliver Brown, Dale Hegarty, Richard Harrison and Ian Hursthouse.

Saints walked out to a strong Harveys side, a frenetic half an hour opening the game with both teams going close and having to do alot of defending, Tiresome running from Saints front men saw them hit the post and make the Harveys' keeper pull off some good saves. Goalless at half time both teams were ready for a break on a warm afternoon.

The second-half saw much the same as the first 45 minutes, alot of running tackling and defending. It took a stunning strike from Harveys man-of-the-match Dave Goodall to beat Tim Killick from 30 yards in the Saints goal.

Saints last two subs entered the frame with half an hour left. Only on the pitch a minute play was cut short due to a serious rib injury to John Dunsby.

Saints, down to ten men for the remainder of the half, started moving the ball about well with Saints man-of-the-match Michael Charlton marshalling the defence well and clearing up most loose balls.

With 15 minutes to go the ball broke to the right hand side of Harveys' box, where the ball was driven in for Andy Clifton to finish calmly.

The game was interrupted with fives left on the clock for not an uncommon sight on Dimple this season, the air ambulance arrived for John Dunsby to transport him to hospital. The ambulance crew decided he would be better travelling by road than air, the game then re-started and finished a draw. A good game of football on bobbly pitch.

Saints would like to thank the ambulance and air ambulance crew who attended to Dunsby's injury.
