Matlock & District Football League
reports from Saturday, 14 November, 20009

Clubs are failing to send in reports, so here is our Press Round-up

Weather plays havoc with matches

It was mixed fortunes for Matlock & District League teams as the autumn rain and wind took its toll on the Derbyshire Junior Cup North second round.

Unfortunately, it saw the energetic Matlock Town Youth defeated 3-0 away from home in a scoreline that flattered Wirksworth Town from the Premier League of the Midlands Regional Alliance.

Two goal-line clearances, plus a sending off for Wirksworth, was indication that it was a closer affair and it was Matlock hit on the break for the third that sealed this tie. Shirland Miners Welfare went 5-0 in the first half, courtesy of goals from Dale Hegarty (2), Ian Hursthouse (2) and Gus Brown, against Holmfield Arms.

With Shirland losing three midfielders due to injuries in a ten minute spell after the break, the visitors got four back in the last 15 minutes to make it a tense affair. It was the weather that defeated AFC Lea Holloway, Laburnum Saints and Darley Dale Lions with unfit pitches forcing their ties to be switched to this Saturday (21 November, 2009).

League clashes saw Riddings Rovers beat Ashbourne 4-3 in an entertaining encounter at Ironville, with the winner scored by formidable super sub Ricky Ashmore who came off the bench in the second half to bag a wonder goal Š prompting players to pile on top of him in delight. Riddings' other goals came from David Robinson (2) and Arthur Gugala against a stronger than usual Ashbourne, with the visitorÕs goals coming from Chris Keeling and a brace from David Meredith.

Black Hippo managed five home goals, but were losers against an ever improving Hilcote United. Tom JacksonÕs Hippo hat-trick included a spot kick, Jamie Uphill netted one and Toby Rice scored within minutes of coming off the bench in the second half.

Three competitions are alive this week. With fixtures called off last weekend, Derbyshire Junior Cup North games include AFC Lea Holloway v Youlgrave United, Laburnum Saints v Pinxton North End and Darley Dale Lions v Tideswell United. In the Manor Pharmacy Shield first round Kings Arms v Matlock Town Youth and Shirland Miners Welfare v Harveys Bar. League games are Tibshelf Community v Black Hippo and Riddings Rovers v Hilcote United. .
