Press Round-up

Shirland close the gap
Shirland Miners Welfare 2 Darley Dale Lions 1
Home scorers: R. Harrison, D. Hegarty
Away scorer: M. French

Shirland started there first league game in 67 days against a Darley Dale side that are in fantastic form with the main aim this season, like many teams in this league, to be crowned Matlock & Dstrict Football League champions.

It was a must win game against the Lions, make or break for Shirland – to lose would have put the visitors in the driving seat with a tehn point lead that would have been hard to haul back.

It was Shirland who raced out of the blocks brightly, a through ball from Richard Harrison found the feet of Ian Hursthouse who put the ball just wide of the post.

The game settled down after a few minutes but it was Shirland who were creating the best chances and it wasn't long before a sweeping ball from Gareth Brown found Steven Wright who was one-on-one with the Lions keeper Gary Widdowson, a cool chip had the him well beaten but the ball went just over bar.

Darley Dale soon found their feet and started to show Shirland why they are top of the league. The visitors are a very good side and they're difficult to play against but the possession they did have didn't really threaten Shirland too much in the first 20 minutes or so that is untill the 21st minute when Shirland failed to clear a Lions throw. The ball fell to the feet of Martin French who hit a sweet shot to fire the visitors into the lead.

As the first half continued both teams had some great chances but it was Shirland who put the most pressure on.

After a string of fine finger tip saves from Widdowson Shirland got the break they were looking for. A Steven Boot header beat Lions' back four and Hursthouse sprinting through fired a thunderbolt only to be denied with a fantastic save, the rebound found Hursthouse again but as he tried to go around the keeper he was bought down with what was described by the refferee as a stonewall penalty. Up stepped Richard Harrison who fired home with a cool and powerful spot kick.

The second half saw both teams play some exciting fast flowing football, the one person that stood out the most though was Lions keeper Widdowson who continued to make some fantastic saves.

Shirland's hard work finally paid off when Dale Hegarty stole the show with a powerful shot in the 89th minute to put Shirland write back in the title chase.

Shirland's manager Dave Thurnham bought the players right back down to earth in the dressing room after this fantastic win by telling his players that "anyone who thinks we're going to walk the title is wrong, there's alot of fantastic teams in this league who just keep getting better and better every week". He added: "It's going to be a long hard relentless slog. Well done you should be proud after that display."

• Shirland's MOM: Richard Harrison. Lions MOM: Gary Widdowson.

Holloway extend unbeaten run
Matlock Town Youth 1 AFC Lea Holloway 2
Home scorers: T. Jackson
Away scorer: S. Bott (2)

In a cracking encounter on Cavendish Fields, AFC Lea Holloway secured three vital points to extend their unbeaten league run to eight matches.

Both sides tried to play good football on a difficult pitch but played out a goalless first half. Matlock took the lead within five minutes of the restart, Tom Jackson poking home a rebound after unlucky Holloway keeper Andrew Bird had pulled off a wonder save.

Holloway took the game to their hosts and were rewarded within minutes. Skipper Nigel Emberton was fouled 30 yards from goal and his quick free-kick put Shaun Bott in on goal to hit the equalizer.

The winner came minutes later, Bird's long kick was controlled by Emberton who laid the ball to Bott, who in turn sent the hard-working Scott Andrews down the left wing. Andrews raced for the byline and his deep cross found Bott who struck first time on the bounce into the bottom left-hand corner from 15 yards for his 15th league goal of the season.

Stout defending ensured Kev Carline's men came away with a crucial win against a good, young Matlock side.

Saints alive!
Laburnum Saints 3 Hilcote United 1
Home scorers: A Clifton (2), Denton
Away scorer: Killick og

Laburnum Saints started under heavy pressure from Hilcote United for the first 20 minutes – their number eight running things from the middle of midfield.

Saints got themselves into the game when another cool finish from Andy Clifton relieving the early pressure and tiresome work from Dunsby, Carson and Denton saw its reward in midfield from then on in.

Saints started the second half well with some good passing and better finishing from Clifon as he grabbed his second of the game.

Pressure again came from Hilcote, whose centre half started leading from the back with bursts through the midfield only to be stopped by some resolute defending from the Saints' centre halves. Good wing play from Sellers and Gregory helped Saints knotch up a third goal which Denton finished.

The only disappointing moment of the match was when Dan Killick put the ball past his dad in goals to rob him of a clean sheet, but credit is due to Andy Clifton who was the Saints' man-of-the-match.

13 February, 2010

Topsy-turvy results brought Matlock & District Football League teams closer together as Darley Dale Lions suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Shirland Miners Welfare.
