Shirland
retain top slot
Riddings Rovers 3 Shirland Miners Welfare 4

Shirland' game yesterday
against Rddings Rovers was one of the hardest games we have had this season
against a side that can beat anyone on their day.
Riddings
took the lead early on with a well-worked goal, ten minutes later Shirland
got back on level terms through Ian Hursthouse. ÊShirland's goal only madeRriddings
stronger as they came at Shirland from every angle making keeper Daz Shaw
work very hard.
But
against the run of play Dale Hegarty scored to give Shirland a slim 2-1
lead.
Riddings
soon took control of the game and with some stunning play scored to put
the scores level, eight minutes later ÊRidding's hard work payed off again
as they were awarded a penalty kick which they scored to put the scores
at 3-2 to Riddings.
The
final ten minutes saw an injury-hit Shirland side fight back, they never
quit and threw bodies forward in an attempt to salvage something from the
game.
Hegarty
lead the fight back with a perfect top corner goal to put Shirland level
with three minutes left, Shirland got the winner with another goal from
Gaz Brown who just can't stop scoring.
MOM: Shirland's
Dale Hegarty.

Laburnum Saints 6 Ashbourne 1
Home scorers: D Wildgoose (2), P Denton (2), R Austin, M Carson
Away
scorer: Phil Clowes
Laburnum Saints came
into the last game of the season looking for three points but missing key
players due to injury and cricket commitments.
After
some good defending and cool shooting Danny Wildgoose opened the scoring
with a rifle of a right foot shot. 'Oscar' Austin scored with a looping
header midway through the first half and Peter 'Miss' Denton scored before
the break.
The
industrial defending of Dan Killick, Dan Gregory and home MOM Michael Charlton
was breached after half-time with Ashbourne scoring just after the whistle.
A lot of goal mouth action came for the rest of the game with 'Kit' Carson
netting his first for a few years. Danny Wildgoose got the fifth with Pete
Denton eventually finding the net again after squandering chance after chance.
Hard
work from the midfield of Carson, Chris Slack and Austin saw Saints run
out on top.
A
special mention goes to Saints unused stand-in keeper Ben Tomlinson who
played very well. He kicked well, shouted well and picked the ball up once!
(Out of the back of the net!!).
In
all it was a good game played in good spirit Ð Bring on the Summer!
MOM: Saints'
Michael Charlton. MOM: Ashbourne's John Hagan

Round-up
Shir-land
coveted Cavendish Cup
3
May , 2010
High-flying Shirland
Miners Welfare lifted the coveted Cavendish Cup with a 9-0 drumming of Matlock-based
Harveys Bar at South Normanton Athletic's ground on May Day Monday.
Matlock
& District Football League's 105-year-old trophy was earned with goals from
Richard Harrison, man-of-the-match Steven Wright (2), Dale Hegarty (4),
Gareth Brown and Ian Hursthouse.
Despite
being under enormous fixture and injury pressure, Shirland dominated the
match from start to finish with Harveys never really threatening although
they defended stoutly for the opening twenty minutes.
But
with three first-half goals there was never really anyway back into the
match for a lacklustre Harveys who found in hard to cope with Shirland's
pace and movement.
The
match was marred by a second-half skirmish which saw Shirland's Paul Hardy
and Harveys' Edward Roberts take an early bath. Shirland's Steven Boot also
got his marching orders after receiving a second yellow card, but even with
nine men Shirland were just too good on the day for their opponents.
Referee
Malc Whittaker, who officiated over the Cavendish Cup Final, collected the
Stuart Baker Shield as Referee of the Year while AFC Lea Holloway's Shaun
Bott won the League's Player of the Year award. These were presented before
the game and extremely well-deserved by both who are great role models for
the game.
In
the league on Saturday Darley Dale Lions triumphed 5-1 over Tibshelf Community.
Goals came from Mark Ashton, Danny Stephenson, Aaron O'Neill (2) and Paul
Godfrey while the visitors replied with a single strike from their man-of-the-match
John Hart.
Victory
left the Lions two points behind leaders Shirland who had hit top slot last
week and secured their margin on Saturday with a closely fought 4-3 victory
on the road against Riddings Rovers.
Shirland's
goals were from Dale Hegarty (2), Gaz Brown and Ian Hursthouse.
Firmly in third place
Matlock Town Youth had a comfortable victory over AFC Lea Holloway at Lea
Green with goals from Dave Whitworth, Sam Hodgson, Steve Pardey (2) and
Chris Johnson.
Holloway
replied with a Gary Siddall strike but they never really coped with Matlock's
pace and pinpoint passing. Some breathtaking triangular movement has been
a feature of Matlock's game this year and their third place finish for the
second successive season is pleasing for them as their brief has been very
much to 'blood' young players, giving them encouragement to improve and
raise their standards.
Laburnum
Saints went into their last game of the season on The Dimple missing key
players due to injury and cricket commitments, so they were delighted with
a 6-1 win over Ashbourne. First-half goals came from Danny Wildgoose, Richard
Austin and Pete Denton.
The
industrial defending of Dan Killick, Dan Gregory and man-of-the-match Michael
Charlton held firm until just after half-time when Ashbourne's Phil Clowes
scored but more Saints goals from Wildgoose, Denton and Martin Carson earned
the points.
League fixtures
on Saturday (8 May, 2010) include Darley Dale Lions v Shirland Miners Welfare,
Tibshelf Community v Hilcote United.
