With AFC Lea Holloway unable to scratch a Wednesday team together, disciplinary action with follow as it did with The Kings Arms a week earlier, it left Hilcote United kicking their heels. The Huthwaite outfit still retain top slot but Riddings Rovers and Matlock Town Youth jump onto the same number of points, with Woodthorpe Rovers and Darley Dale keeping up the pressure with victories. Wirksworth Alboin and Shirland Miners Welfare picked up their first points and wins, all which conclude the early season midweek fixtures.

Hilcote's Daniel Ryan hits six as United deservedly keep their place at the summit with a 100% record (Saturday, 4 September, 2010). Well done to Dan Palmer and his team.

Matlock League ready for The Big Kick-off

Matlock & District Football League kicks off this week with a strengthened 14-team set up to ensure it will be a top quality, action-packed season.

Tansley, Tibshelf, Wirksworth Albion and Woodthorpe Rovers are the new clubs who have decided to compete for honours and join the more established teams of AFC Lea Holloway, Black Hippo, Darley Dale Lions, Harveys Bar, Hilcote United, Kings Arms, Laburnum Saints, Matlock Town Youth, Riddings Rovers are Shirland Miners Welfare.

It was classy and hard working Shirland who were last year's double winners confidently picking up the famous 105-year-old Cavendish Cup and the Len Land Premier Cup as worthy League Champions. Hilcote earned their Manor Pharmacy Shield title defeating Shirland in the final.

Darley Dale Lions ran the League champions close and lost only twice, recording the top tally of goals with 94, and will no doubt be a force again in the 2010-2011 season.    Chairman Drew Robertson said: "We worked hard in the closed season to ensure that we have attracted in more clubs to bring a fresh look to the League. It really does promise to be an outstanding, entertaining season with clubs and players keyed up for the challenges ahead."

And he added: "The League continues to go from strength to strength with our web site – MatlockFootball.co.uk – attracting more than 1.1million hits in the last 12 months.

"It's a great vehicle for sponsors and advertisers who we are always looking to help us boost grassroots football around the massive area we cover with our teams.

"The League has added to this powerful web outlet this term with the launch of a weekly Bulletin to clubs, officials and players and also created a Facebook presence to encourage a community feel to the League – offering 'great opportunities' to businesses."

Club comments

RIDDINGS I'm sure we'll give a good account of ourselves this season and hopefully progress as the squad is much the same with the addition of four new players with no regular players from last season leaving the club.
Our squad is still young and I hope to see with another year's experience behind them a more confident outfit that will now see games out to the end when in winning positions as inexperience in these situations cost us vast amounts of points last season and also a place in the Cavendish cup final.
Gavin Bocking

HARVEYS Hilcote, Darley Dale Lions. Shirland, Harveys, Matlock Youth.
Just hope we can at least hit there or maybe challenge this season we've had alot leave and got at least two quaility signings this year to add to the bulk. We've ready for the Derby opener with Matlock Youth.
Craig Cantril

HOLLOWAY Lea Green is now a no smoking site and that AFC Lea Holloway ask that all visiting clubs respect this.

WIRKSWORTH Everyone at Wirksworth Albion is looking forward to getting the season started on Wednesday (hopefully with a win). Good luck to all sides!
