And
so the cock crowed in Stonebroom on MayDay Monday and no one could
deny Shirland Miners Welfare their right to be crowned Cavendish Cup winners.
After
a wait of many years for manager Dave Thurnham, Shirland Miners Welfare
are back dining at the top table. Not even Harveys' fans can say they don't
deserve it after the performance Shirland put on at South Normanton.
Thurnham's side were
the superior team by some considerable margin thumping Harvey Bar 9-0 in
a final like nothing seen before. Before the game Thurnham even struggled
with the fact that he may not have eleven fit players to field due to the
massive injury list.
Prior
to the game Shirland were reminded that Harveys beat some of the best sides
in the Matlock & District Football League to get to the final and the
boss gave his boys a chilling reminder of what it's like to lose in a final
and come out second best.
Shirland
started and finished the game in complete control, these boys have played
every two to three days for the last three weeks and losing this game was
not an option.
By
half time Shirland were 3-0 up and by that time there was a sense that there
was no way back for Harveys. As the game continued Sshirland found more
space to play the ball and with this came an onslaught of goals.
Goals
from Dale Hegarty (4), Steven Wright (2), Ian Hursthouse, Richard Harrison
and Gareth Brown gave manager Thurnham one of his proudest moments in football.
This
is the first year Thurnham has had as a manager where he has built a team
with players that wanted to play for Shirland, the first year that no-one
has left the club from the following year to play for the dark side, this
is the year we will all remember that Shirland Miners Welfare FC and Dave
Thurnham won the Cavendish Cup final win!
Everyone
at Shirland is so proud of every single player and what they have done this
season.

Magnificent
trophy has rich history
The Cavendish Cup is
a magnificent trophy with a rich history, dating back to 1905 when it was
donated to the Matlock League by the Right Honourable Victory Cavendish
the 9th Duke of Devonshire (1868-1938).
Apart
from a 16 year gap, due to war and disabandonment of the league, the trophy
has always been vigorously fought for. There are three teams that hold the
distinction for having won it five times...Winster St Johns, Wirksworth
Ivanhoe and Ashover.
Ashbourne
Town became our current champions after winning 3-2 in the traditional May
Day clash this year against Matlock Town Youth. This added to their Championship
title and Manor Pharmacy Shield victory a clean sweep in their first
season with us.
